What do I need to bring on a MoRon ride?
The MoRonIc ride is a fun and casual ride. Besides showing up ready and on time, little else is required.
Here is a guide to help you have a good time.
Bike
Extremely useful on a bike ride. Make sure it works before the ride.
We are not gear freaks, but for the newer rider, make sure you have:
- A Front Shock
- Wide range of gears
- Real Knobby tires
- A way to carry water
- A pump
- A spare tube
Sunday or Monday night is a good time to do a preride check.
Lights
The elusive MoRon is largely known to be nocturnal. Powerful lights cable of sustaining a 3 hour ride is required during nightriding season.
Most riders will be using High Output HID systems from:
Using lower power systems is possible and often done, but the more light you have, the faster you could ride.
On our winter rides, please come prepared with adequate lighting and backup systems.
- Ideally, bring two fully operational systems.
- Minimally, bring a spare bulb and spare battery.
- Do not bring partially charged batteries
- Please check your lighting system thoroughly BEFORE the ride
- Please bring an LED emergency backup light, even if you brought two high-powered lights
- Please bring a strong alcoholic beverage in case both systems fail
Front Fender
Many front fender options exist, but few are truely 'good'.
The best front fenders for rain riding in Marin are the THE (Toby Henderson Enterprises) fenders.
These front fenders are the only real choices on the market. Everything else sucks:
THE Cross Country Front Fender - This fender is the gold standard for front fenders. They work very well.
THE Downhill Front Fender - This fender is just like the CC version, but a little wider. This may even be a better option and is being tested by Peter this season.
options:
Mud Machine fenders are another possible option.
Headland Dirt Diggler is another option.
A rear fender is an option. Most people find that they do not have much effect, but this gets down to preference. The key is to get something fairly solid. Rear fenders get kicked around a lot and the flimsy ones are the worst.
I have not tried this one, but it looks nice.
Booze
Creative drinks are strongly encouraged if not manditory.
Hard liquer is usually brought due to compactness and weight. Many people experiment with special mixes and brews.
BEWARE OF CANDY JUICE!
Beer is always a favorite. Canned beer is lightest, but the beer snobs will give you crap.
Good Food
Forget all those bars and jells. Real food. Candy. Salty things. Cookies. Bring good food.
Proper Clothing
In wet wether, you will get wet. No matter what you where, you will be soaked through.
Dress so that you stay warm, even when wet.
Windbreakers and rain jackets need vents to keep from overheating, but the sheild the dreded wind. Fuzzy clothing is nice since it has some wind stopping capabilities especially when wet.
Crew length wool socks work great to help keep your feet warm.
A strong-ass liver
A MOB attitude
